Brussels, 1 October 2026. On 22 September 2026, the SMACC+ project held the first webinar of its 2026–2027 series, bringing together experts and professionals to explore the potential of microalgae cultivation and its contribution to innovation and sustainability.

The online session, entitled “Microalgae Cultivation”, marked the beginning of the SMACC+ webinar series, which aims to encourage knowledge sharing, strengthen collaboration and explore innovative solutions for sustainable microalgae production.

During the webinar, participants had the chance to discover the latest developments and opportunities in microalgae cultivation, with a particular focus on its potential applications across different sectors. The session also highlighted how innovation and sustainable practices can help address current challenges in the sector and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The event brought together three experts from leading organisations in the microalgae sector: Tonia Príncipe, Research Scientist , from the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), Spain; Jean-Baptiste Berard, Marine Biotechnology Engineer, from IFREMER, France; and Sofia Vaz, Business Development Manager, from A4F – Algae for Future, Portugal. Their contributions provided valuable insights and encouraged knowledge exchange, experience sharing and discussion on the potential of microalgae as a resource for a more sustainable future.

The webinar, within the framework of the SMACC+ project - funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme - was co-organized by Cosmetic Valley, Finnova Foundation and Cinbio-University of Vigo.

Through its activities, the project aims to foster cooperation, facilitate knowledge transfer and promote innovation in the microalgae sector.

This first webinar marks an important milestone in the 2026–2027 series, which will continue with further sessions exploring the opportunities and challenges associated with microalgae and their sustainable applications
