Educational workshops for schoolchildren at La Concepción highlight the importance of sustainability and waste valorisation

• The initiative helps raise awareness among younger generations about waste reduction and environmental protection

Tuesday, 9 June 2026, Brussels. On the occasion of World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June, the city of Málaga organised a day of environmental awareness activities for schoolchildren at the La Concepción Botanical-Historical Garden. The initiative, promoted by Málaga City Council through its Environmental Sustainability Department, highlighted the importance of environmental education as a key tool for encouraging responsible habits and advancing towards more sustainable production and consumption models.

This celebration is closely aligned with the objectives of the European project ECOFFEE, which promotes the circular economy through the valorisation of spent coffee grounds from the HORECA sector, transforming them into high-value bioproducts for agricultural and environmental applications.

Environmental education for a more sustainable future

The activities organised at La Concepción enabled young participants to learn about key concepts related to environmental protection, responsible resource management and waste reduction. Through educational workshops and interactive activities, schoolchildren discovered how everyday actions can contribute to sustainability and environmental preservation.

Environmental education is one of the fundamental pillars for advancing towards a circular economy, where waste is no longer viewed as a disposal problem but as a valuable resource capable of generating economic, social and environmental benefits.

Turning waste into resources: the ECOFFEE circular model

In line with the values promoted during World Environment Day, ECOFFEE works to demonstrate that spent coffee grounds can become a strategic raw material through innovative valorisation processes. The project develops solutions that transform this widely generated waste stream into sustainable products for the agricultural sector.

In doing so, ECOFFEE contributes to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, promoting efficient resource use and supporting production models that are fully aligned with the circular economy principles championed by the European Union.

Awareness and participation to address environmental challenges

World Environment Day provides an opportunity to highlight the importance of involving society as a whole in the ecological transition. Initiatives such as the educational workshops held in Málaga help bring environmental challenges closer to younger generations and encourage a stronger culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

This environmental awareness initiative is part of Task 3.4 of the ECOFFEE project, focused on the “Organisation of Sectoral Workshops and Educational Activities”, under the local coordination of FUMIHOGAR in Málaga. ECOFFEE has a total budget of €256,451.25 and is co-funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement CIRCULOOS No. 101092295). The consortium is composed of AZTI, Euskovazza, FUMIHOGAR and the Finnova Foundation, organisations working together to develop innovative, sustainable and replicable solutions for coffee waste valorisation, transforming spent coffee grounds from the HORECA sector into high-value bioproducts for agricultural and environmental applications.
