The ECOFFEE project, funded by Horizon Europe through the CIRCULOOS ecosystem, held a workshop on Coffee recycling and the circular economy in Valencia on February 2, 2026. The event took place at Sabadell HUB Empresa with both in-person and online participation, organized by the Finnova Foundation as part of the TRADITIONS2EU initiative.
The workshop gathered stakeholders from Spain, Brussels, and Latin America to discuss circular economy applications and coffee sector by-product valorization. Juan Manuel Revuelta, CEO of Finnova, opened discussions emphasizing the importance of innovation and public–private collaboration to drive projects aligned with circular economy and sustainability.
David San Martín from AZTI presented research on transforming coffee by-products into animal feed and biocides. Carlos Ramos from FUMIHOGAR showcased FumiCoffe, a fumigation product derived from coffee grounds. Iker Beristain of EUSKOVAZZA discussed reverse logistics for collecting coffee waste, while Milton Restrepo from Ibagué Limpia highlighted startup potential for sustainability innovations.
The ECOFFEE project runs for 12 months with a budget of €256,451.25, aiming to convert coffee grounds into high-value biobased products using circular economy principles, reverse logistics, digital traceability, and environmental validation.
