The project took part in the LIFE Platform Meeting on AgriFood in Bologna and visited the circular model of FunghiEspresso in Florence, exploring new solutions to transform coffee waste into high-value resources

Brussels, 12 December 2025.  The European project ECOFFEE carried out a technical mission to Italy from 3 to 5 December to advance circular bioeconomy solutions based on coffee grounds. The mission included participation in the LIFE Platform Meeting “Future-Proofing Europe’s Agri-Food Sector”, held at the University of Bologna and organised by IMAGE LIFE with the support of DG CLIMA, CINEA and the CIRCULOOS ecosystem.

ECOFFEE was represented by Carlos Ramos from FumiHogar, partner of the consortium. The event gathered more than twenty LIFE projects focused on sustainable agriculture, climate transition and circular resource use. The sessions explored how organic residues —including coffee grounds— can be turned into high-value resources for a low-emission economy.

On 5 December, the delegation visited Villa Costanza (Florence) to learn from FunghiEspresso, an initiative that uses coffee grounds as substrate to grow mushrooms. The visit provided a practical demonstration of circular economy applied to agricultural by-products.

About ECOFFEE
ECOFFEE is funded by the Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101092295), selected under the CIRCULOOS Open Call 2, with a total budget of €256,451.25 and a duration of 12 months.

The consortium is composed of AZTI (coordinator), Euskovazza, FumiHogar and Finnova Foundation.
The project develops technological solutions to valorise coffee by-products through:

  • 🔄 Reverse logistics for coffee ground collection
  • 💻 Digital traceability via the RAMP platform (CIRCULOOS)
  • 🌿 Environmental assessment using the GRETA tool

ECOFFEE aims to demonstrate that coffee waste can become a valuable resource, driving innovation, circularity and sustainability across Europe.
